I’d like to invite you to sing a song in your native language with me and share that online to spread a message of connection.
Let me tell you the story of how I came up with that idea.
I used to work as a German teacher for immigrants and refugees for a couple of years. We had many beautiful moments, but here is the one I’ll never forget.
In my class we had people from more than 10 different countries and ethnicities – and believe me there were a lot of differences in viewpoints among us and discussions easily got very heated.
One day, I brought a song about our shared humanity. After explaining the lyrics, we all sang the song together. And then emotion just hit us, tears started coming to our eyes, men and women alike, some even started weeping.
To be honest, I felt a little unsure about the whole experience. But what happened after the song was even more surprising.
The whole room was drop-dead silent. Now that was a first time, it never happened with that group before.
I was puzzled, but honestly, really enjoyed the silence. After a few moments, one person broke the silence and said: “Thank you, Gabriel!!! I have a question: Can we do that again tomorrow?” – And so we did.
Music has the power to connect us over differences. It brings us back to our shared humanity. Recently, I was thinking about how to bring dancing and music back in this time. I started a group, where we were dancing in the park with distance. People were loving the idea. Soon people who couldn’t join were telling me that they would like to join from home.
That sparked a couple ideas, I always like to connect people from different places. So I was thinking about collecting danceable music from upcoming artists all around the world and share that online. Then another idea crossed my mind. What if artists from different countries would sing each others songs? Wouldn’t that be an even greater testimony to our shared connection?
And then it struck me: “Gabriel, why don’t you go first?”
So here is my question for you:
Would you like to sing a song in your native language together with me? And then share that online to spread a message of connection? I love languages and think that each one is absolutely beautiful in it’s own unique way. And I would love to share the beauty of your language with the world.
If you feel, that this is something you’d like to do, then please share a link of the song and the lyrics in the comments below and give me a little bit of time to practice 🙂 Can’t wait to hear from you!!!
